The FIFA Women’s World Cup Brings New Visuals of Sport and Fitness into the Limelight

By Loren Lazic - 5 min read

Our photo editor Loren Lazic explores the representation of women in sport - showcasing why there is more to be won than just the match at the women's football final on Sunday 7th July 2019.

With the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup final kicking off in France this weekend, the topic of women in sport burns bright in our minds. Most vividly, the lack of equality and support surrounding the tournament. With these issues in mind, we create a space to celebrate the strength, power and undeniable grace that shapes the female form.

Our visual curation of stunning images captured by you, the EyeEm Community, aims to do just that, giving female athletes the spotlight they deserve.

It’s Time for Us to Join the Call for Change

The lack of hype around the FIFA Women’s World Cup tournament, along with a staggering prize money difference of $532m between the men’s and women’s tournament, has hit headlines on a global scale. It seems women’s football is finally deemed good enough to air on national television, however teams are then reprimanded for ‘over-celebrating’ when scoring their 13th goal. Would the same have applied in a men’s league?

Varied forms of media are working to push these issues into the limelight - Germany’s Women’s World Cup advert for example, opening with lines such as ‘we play for a nation that doesn’t even know our names’. Nike, alongside a number of other global brands and publications, are working to create a similar awareness; encouraging women to ‘dream further’, be their own role models, and #justdoit.

“female athletes doing what they do best, without the confines of gender stereotypes”

So today, with the final match just days away, we ask you:

How can we contribute to portraying women in a strong, positive light through fitness and sport?

How can we show in an image that women are worthy of equal benefits, rewards and treatment in the sports industry?

Can we use the power of a photograph to demonstrate just how strong and capable the female form is?

The time has come to use our influence across the world to make a forceful positive impact. Let us create and share imagery that celebrates female athletes doing what they do best, without the confines of gender stereotypes. We have the ability now to prove to our future generations of girls that they too can thrive and shine in sport, regardless of gender, race, religion or size.
