About Vivian Maier

Vivian Maier was an American of Franco-Austrian descent who spent the majority of her youth in France before returning to the US to become a nanny. She worked as a caregiver in New York City and Chicago for most of her adult life.

In her spare time she became an avid photographer, and it is in these two cities that most of her photographs were taken. Her body of work encompasses photographs of a different era that was both more intimate and yet much more formal, including a rigid social structure—a subject which she often deconstructs in her images.
