We followed the fjord to the horizon. Green meadows in the valleys, bare landscape on the mountain ridges. Next stop: Kjerag. The rain sat in as we started our hike. The bold rocks became slippery and soon impassable. We stopped and looked around. Up to the rain covered summits, down to the fjord hundred of meters below. We knew we had to call it a day. A last rest before heading back to our camp at the end of the lovely fjord. We were dancing through the overcrowded streets. The air was filled with smoke and glitter from the music trucks. Happiness was all around. And a beat, that didn't make a difference between all the peoples' different ages and backgrounds. Equality. A year ago I met Ana. She was sitting in a wheelchair as she was recovering from a paralysis. She asked me to shoot her portrait. She wanted to document this part of her life. I was curious - about her story and the way I would choose to photograph her. I was expecting someone struggling with the changes in her life, but I was wrong. She was the happiest person I've ever met. Rain came in and went. And wind. We took cover, took pictures, took the opportunity to go with the flow. Our shooting extended to a sightseeing tour through the badass districts of Hamburg. Each with its own specific vibe. Karo, Schanze, Pauli - and ending up on Kiez. A badass, local brand, black hoodie as souvenir from the city before our paths have parted. Ksenia came from Moscow to visit her brother- a tattoo artist working in St. Pauli at that time. It was early afternoon and we went for some caffeine to one of the hipster places around. Bringing life back into our veins with coffee & tea and talking about the travels we did. Meeting and connecting with new people; every time a new opportunity to change your thinking. One of the things I love about portrait photography. Now on my blog. It was not my first time in Norway, but every time someone speaks about the viking country, it's this day that pops into my head. We got up early; crawled out of our tent while the stars were still covering the sky. A few hours hike to our destination: Preikestolen. One of Norway's great landmarks - and one that stayed in my soul since then. The morning raised and by the time we reached the plateau, the sun was already some minutes above the mountain range, covered behind a thick coat of clouds. Wind was pushing the low hanging grey into the land. A theatre like, rays of light were illuminating parts of the landscape from time to time to catch our attention. Mountains as far as the eye can see, only interrupted by the fjord, 600m below our feet. Her backbone healed and after a few months of rehab she was able to walk again without any additional help. The day she returned her wheelchair, she wanted me to shoot her portrait again. She dressed in her best dress, a long, black ball gown, and put on wings. Light as feather, lifted from the ground, celebrating life. I make my couple kiss during a shooting - a lot. Not everyone is comfortable with kissing in public, but that's one of the main reasons I like to be alone with my couple while shooting the portrait session. Often it's the first (and only) time on their wedding day, when they have some private minutes for themselves. The time they realise, they are now married. It's a pure moment and I love to capture it. And sometimes you spot some hidden kissing talents like Nicole & Niko. It's high saison and every weekend now I spend among lovers, who celebrate their connection in their own specific way. Elopements at the beach, summer parties underneath apple trees, BBQs in the garden. Families come together from the age of just a few weeks to far over 90 years old. Food & joy, drinks & talks. Spreading the love and dancing the night away. It was around 5am when I crawled out of the tent back then in summer 2014. The sun was already some minutes above the horizon and the birds were greeting the new day. I grabbed my camera and went to the beach. The shoreline was covered with little archipelagos, tiny, rocky islands sometimes connected with wooden bridges. The air was fresh and almost windless. And the surface of the sea turned into a mirror. I hopped from island to island, chased reflections in the water and looked out for hidden places in the sun to welcome the morning and to gain energy for the day. Over the last 3 years I've been to Sweden more often than to any other country. And this reminds me why. We walked through the streets. Looking for patterns & light to use for our shooting, enjoying the flair of the district. From time to time we stopped at the little basement shops around to go for treasure hunting. Handmade with love - and every time a new discovery. My prey: stationery. Analogue, touchable, authentic. I'm deeply in love with paper - a nicer way than just call it addiction. And again, I'm a successful hunter. Her body tells her story. The huge scar over her backbone, where some of her vertebras were replaced, is only one chapter of it. And it's beauty. Beauty is not about perfection. It's not about perfect proportions, a mark free skin or bleached teeth. It's the imperfection that separates us from what mass media tries to teach us about beauty. Imperfection adds character. It makes us individual. And so it makes us free. Before we headed back to the reception, we passed a beautiful, long avenue leading to one of the old estates that are characteristic for the landscape in Northern Germany. Tall trees on each side leading to the horizon. A path older than our lovely car - an oldtimer from the 1930th. We reached our camping ground an hour before sunset. A nice place near the shore on one of the greener little islands. We setup our tent and looked to the sky. A massive cloud front was coming from the Baltic Sea. We grabbed our food box with everything needed for a fast camping diner and watched how the sinking sun battled with the overtaking clouds. The last, golden rays of light hit the waves before the sky turned deeply dark. This would be a cosy night. I woke up early today. I opened the window to my garden and a warm breeze came in. Memories to a Swedish summer morning came into my mind. Camping on green meadow, the first rays of light reflecting in the wet spider web, birds singing in the distance. I inhaled & exhaled. I opened all doors & all windows and let summer in. The first tea of the day out in the hammock. This is already a good day. It was our last day on Svalbard as we approached the end of the fjord. The boat slowed down, trying to get through the shelf ice. But it was still too thick. We went on deck, a harsh, icy wind on our face. In the distance we spotted our destination: an abandoned Russian mining colony.
