One of my favorite images of all time. Going *way* back this time to the early '90s and something I loved shooting at my newspaper gig in the western suburbs: baseball. After I got a few CYA shots of the pitcher pitching, I positioned myself on the third base side, practically in the dugout. It was the only space at that particular field one could get within the field boundaries without running the risk of getting beaned by a line drive foul ball (again). You had to check with the umpire, and sometimes the coaches, as to where you'd be allowed to go. I don't remember the exact play but I knew something may happen at third base so I was ready. The runner had started on first and was advanced by a base hit to center. I don't know if he made the decision to try to stretch it to third, or if he was waved on by the third base coach. When he got close I let my #Canon F1-N motor drive fly. I think I can safely say still that in this line of work, there are few sights and sounds in the world as beautiful as a motor drive on full capturing a moment that you know has the potential to be quite special. Since this was shot on film I had to wait until much later to see what I actually managed to catch. After processing the film (by hand), I anxiously pored over the negatives until I found this moment. I let out a whoop. I showed a print to the sports editor and he just smiled. A big smile. It ran across three columns on the sports section front. Getting back to the game: In exchange for needing several stitches to close up his lip, the third baseman managed to apply a solid tag and hold onto the ball, ending the inning. His stock amongst his teammates went up immeasurably. Another flashback to my newspaper days. In 2000 I was assigned to cover the funeral of a 12-year old boy who collapsed and died while playing a hockey game in the suburbs. It was very sad to say the least, and I grumbled to myself at the time about why was this news, etc. But I was assigned, so I went. I was uncomfortable being there, but it was my job to tell the story. Another stark reminder for me that community journalism wasn't always craft fairs, puppet shows and Friday night football. As the boy's friends arrived at the church, spying me across the street with my 300mm lens (plus a teleconverter) several of them did not take kindly to me being there, cursing in stage whispers and flipping me the bird. After the service as his casket was brought out, several of his friends lined up outside on the steps in their jerseys and held their sticks as the pallbearers passed by. It was a very powerful and moving image that I did not expect when I first arrived. Though once I saw it developing, I knew that'd be the shot. I got the shot pictured here and left for my next assignment. After the image and story were published I got a call from the boy's mother asking to meet. Uh oh, I thought, she's going to lay into me. Why was I there? How could you? were among the questions I feared she was going to ask. We met at a coffee shop and talked for a while. It turned out that she and her family loved my image and thanked me for being there. I was shocked. She even asked for copies of the image which I gladly provided (we normally charged for prints, but I did them for free). Her son's friends, some of the same that had earlier cursed me, had expressed interest in having the image to keep and remember him by. I told her that it was difficult for me to cover the funeral, because that I, too, had suffered loss (my father passing a few years earlier) and felt I was intruding at such a raw emotional moment, and I wasn't sure how I would feel if someone was taking pictures at my father's service. She said she understood and expressed no ill will because it was my job. She hugged me and thanked me again as we parted. Such grace. I nearly wept.
