The last of the winter ice clings to the canyon surrounding Overlander falls as spring takes hold. The falls are named after the Overlanders expedition of 1862 when a group of around 150 men with one woman (and her three children) travelled across the prairies and through the Rocky Mountains to BC, intending to reach the Cariboo goldfields. The falls are in the early mountainous stretches of the Fraser River which subsequently flows 1,375 kilometers (854 mi) downstream towards Vancouver. The milky way rises out of the dim glow of over 5 million people as a lonely waterfall cascades into the abyss that is the Grose valley. Few people outside of Australia realise that one of the world’s largest temperate forested wilderness areas borders on Sydney's metropolitan area, with its foothills starting less than 50 kilometres (31 mi) west of Sydney Harbour. The Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area covers 10,300 square kilometres (4,000 sq mi) of wilderness and sits as a stark contrast to the city just beyond its boarder. After 25 years of settlement in Sydney, and numerous failed attempts, the mountains were first successfully crossed in 1813 by an expedition led by Gregory Blaxland, William Lawson and William Charles Wentworth. The ruggedness, isolation and impassability of the terrain held off most development in the region despite the area being suitable for dam construction and rich in coal and shale oil. First proposed as a National Park in 1932 a long fought conservation battle ended in 1959 with the formation of the Blue Mountains National Park. The falls, known as Bridal Veil falls , cascade 180m to the base of the cliff. Mt Banks at the end of the valley sits at an elevation of 1,049 m (3,442 ft) . After over a thousand years, deep blue glacial ice, tortured and stress fractured comes close to finishing its journey from the Southern Patagonin Ice field to Argentino Lake. Hard to comphrend the scale here but at its terminus the Perito Moreno Glacier has an average thickness of 170m (558ft); the contorted ripples on the surface are between 30 and 60 m (98 and 195 ft) high. This shot was taken at the peak of the midday sun. The extreme brightness of the ice, capable of causing snow blindness in a short period of time, has silhouetted out the sky. With a total area of 12,363 km2 (4,773 sq mi) of ice the Southern Patagonian Icefield is the third largest body of fresh water in the world (after the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets). With the planet warming up, the ice sheet is melting at an alarming rate and has retreated over 10km since the late 19th century. Spring creates some interesting conditions in the mountains as the ice melts and the rivers begin to burst through their icy cages like awkward teenagers trying to find their feet. Sometimes beautiful, sometimes incongruous, but always exquisite. This shot is taken of the lower falls in Johnson Canyon and turned out to be quite a challenging shoot in the middle of the day. It took a panorama of eight wide angle shots at 16mm (with a full fame sensor) stitched into this single square to capture what I felt was a realistic representation of the falls and the pool below with minimal edge distortion. Rainy gloom descends over the Rock of Cashel, County Tipperary. The round tower dates from c.1100 while the cathedral was built between 1235 and 1270. The rock was sacked in 1647 during the Irish Confederate Wars by forces aligned with Cromwell. Close to 1,000 were killed during the sacking of Cashel, as many of the locals had sought protection in the church, with the bodies in the churchyard being described as being five or six deep. In the final stand numerous ladders were laid against the church windows and soldiers swarmed the building. For another half an hour the massacre raged on inside the church, until a depleted few retreated up the bell tower. Only sixty defending soldiers remained at this point, and accepted a final call to surrender. However, after they had descended the tower and thrown their swords away, all were killed. The atrocity at Cashel caused a deep impact in Ireland, as it was the worst single atrocity committed in Ireland since the start of fighting in 1641. The Rock of Cashel was finally abandoned completely in 1749 with the removal of the cathedral roof. The wind and the cold, the omnipresent sense of insignificance, it all somehow creates a feeling of peace. Humans are strange creatures in the way that places of inhospitable isolation often provide a true sense of calm. It says a lot about the evolutionary search for beauty over practicality, and the in-built desire to seek new pastures well before the old ones have lost productivity. Despite this we seem to repeatedly lock ourselves in cages of our own making while we push our heads against the glass wishing we were on the other side. The lifeblood of the NSW outback, beautiful reflections along this side tributary to the Darling River belies the truth of a stagnant dying river. The result of both long term upstream drought and controversial water use policies, the Darling stopped flowing in 2016 south of Wilcannia and the once great Menindee Lakes dried up. The Washington Monument, designed in the simple shape of an ancient Egyptian obelisk, was built in honour of George Washington. Constructed between 1848 and 1884 it was the tallest structure in the world at the time of completion, until the construction of the Eiffel Tower in France in 1889. The monument however remains the world's tallest stone structure standing 554 feet 7 11/32 inches (169.046 m) tall. It has an aluminum apex, which at the time of casting was the largest piece of aluminum in the world with Aluminum being relatively unknown having a value similar to silver. The slight change in shading of the marble at 46m (150ft) came from a halt in construction between 1854 and 1877 due to lack of funds and the civil war with construction eventually resuming from a different source of stone. If one had painted a winter scene at Helmcken falls early in the 20th century, it would have been dismissed as a work of fantasy. In an example of how recently the colonial exploration of a lot of British Columbia was undertaken, the waterfall was not known to exist outside of the indigenous communities until it was discovered during a land survey by Robert Henry Lee in 1913. Here the Murtle River plunges down a spectacular 141 m (or 463 ft) in a single drop. To put this in some perspective this is nearly three times as high as Niagara Falls with the winter 'ice cone' that grows around the base of the waterfall reaching similar heights to Niagara itself (51m or 165ft). The falls are home to the world’s hardest ice climbs, which ascend up the overhanging spray ice in the cavern behind the waterfall. The Murtle river drops over the western escarpment of the Murtle Pleatu which was formed from lava deposited as part of the Wells Gray-Clearwater volcanic field 200,000 years ago. The falls themselves however did not form until the wide scale erosion and flooding that occurred in Canada after the massive glacial melting period at the end of the last ice age a mere 10,000 years ago. Sunset at Providence Canyon in South Georgia. The canyon formation made up of a kaleidoscope of coloured sands and clays, owes its existence to destructive early farming practices in the 19th century as is was unknown at the time that the undulating hills were made up of deep sand deposits below a very thin crust of clayey topsoil. Once the topsoil had been disturbed the natural elements did the rest with the canyon progressively deepening over the subsequent 150 years. The dramatic pinnacles which remain are sections of clay which the sand has eroded around. The erosion gullies reach depths of 150 feet (or 46m) and are referred to by the locals as Georgia's "Little Grand Canyon". Providence Canyon State Park, Georgia, United States of America. There are some places in this world where you really do feel like you have stepped back into a different epoch. Once a part of the supercontinent Gondwana, the Australian and Antarctic plates were the last of the major Gondwanan continental plates to split, 45 million years ago. The subsequent isolation of Tasmania from the mainland has resulted in the remnant temperate rainforest with an incredibly diverse range of species descended from stock once widespread across Gondwana. Spring slowly breaks winters frozen hold on Medicine Lake. While the Maligne River pours into the lake from the south, the lake is actually a geological anomaly as there is no visible exit to the lake. In spring the river cuts a path through the ice across the lake towards the North Western ends abruptly at this pool where it is thought to drain through the soluble limestone rock below. It does not surface again for 16km where Maligne Canyon improbably cuts its way out of the ground. The sinking river system is thought to be one of the largest inaccessible cave systems anywhere in the world. A rare 'blood' aurora fills the sky across the Northern Rockies. Taken just this past weekend, red or ‘blood' aurora’s are created by oxygen atoms at an altitude of between 200–500 km (120-300miles) colliding in a high energy state and emitting red light at 630 nm. In contrast the more common green aurora are oxygen atoms at a lower altitude of 70-200km (40-120 miles) and lower energy state emitting light at 557.7 nm. In most cases to see a red aurora you need an extremely dark sky and to be looking from a lower latitude across the top layers of a distant high latitude aurora. When the aurora is closer or overhead, the subtle high altitude red fringe is drowned out by the intensity of the lower altitude green aurora. In this shot the green aurora is also visible spilling over the mountains however it has taken a more yellow hue as it’s mixed with the light of the red aurora from behind it. If you look at the high resolution version of this shot you can see 7 shooting stars in the time it took for this 20 second exposure, although 6 of them are quite faint. The shot was taken at a latitude of 55 North looking across the rugged Hart Ranges of the Northern Rocky Mountains which form part of the Pine Le Moray Provincial Park.
