Whenever I find it difficult to decide how an image should look I just let myself play with it and see where it goes. I try to imagine what it was I saw and was thinking at the time I took the photo. I try to turn it from something bland and boring into something a little bit interesting. Sometimes it works, most of the times it doesn't but it's all about trying and learning. I'm not sure how I feel about this photo just yet, but I'm glad that I am actually uploading it rather than letting it sit on a hard drive somewhere. So I say let yourself have some fun and not be so judgemental about your images. You don't have to treat your EyeEm profile like a carefully curated portfolio (although you absolutely can), think of it as a playground for you and your images. Think of it as an artistic scrap book of ideas and failed experiments. Don't be afraid to just try something new. The EyeEm community is one of the best communities online, both forgiving and encouraging. A storm rolls in over Bangkok. The sky turns a deep, dark haze of gray and the rain begins to pour down. Rainy season in Bangkok always fascinates me, it's like the storm turns up to 11. It starts raining sideways, the sky flashes violently and our entire top floor apartment shakes with every thunderous clap. I love the violence and beauty in it all. Riding the gentle waves. Laos Boat Water ASIA
Hey guys, it's been a while huh? So recently I had one of my biggest photography mishaps yet. While riding around the Thakhek Loop in Laos my vlogging camera (and my main camera for this trip) decided to let some dust into the lens housing. Now, this was pretty early on in the trip and These rural villages in Laos don't exactly have camera repair shops. So I pushed on and continued with my dusty Canon compact. The further we went around the loop the more dust it let in and when I got back to Bangkok I took it into the Canon shop. Now, we're talking maybe 3 or 4 tiny specks of dust trapped between the lens and the sensor so it's not much. I though they'd just take the lens out, clean it and I'd be on my way. Nope. They replaced the entire lens housing for the cool sum of £200... Yeesh. Good job I had insurance that covered it (by the way, if you're ever buying a camera from Currys in the Uk and they ask if you want their protection plan the answer is 'yes'). So why am I telling you all this? Well the last photo I posted on here was before the dust started getting bad. Every other photo after it needed careful retouching to remove the dust spots which were in the most inconvenient places. But, 2 months later, I've done it. Dust spots removed and the images are now ready to be edited. Thank you for sticking by me and more images from this trip will be coming soon. Oh yeah, and a few more things: I spent my birthday last month in Singapore so I have some shots from that trip too, and... It's now only 2 months until I leave my job in Bangkok and 3 months until Jade and I return to England... Nervous and excited! Camera envy. I've been patiently waiting to buy myself a new camera. I had my sights set on the Sony a6000 for quite a while. Originally I couldn't decide which one I wanted: an a7, a5000 or a6000. I finally made my mind up and then Sony went ahead and announced the a6300. Jade's Dad, leading our adventure, wanted to get a new, lighter camera so he went ahead and got the a6000 two weeks before we left for Laos. I'll be getting the new a6300 in the future to replace my beat up 7 year old Sony Nex5N. Sony Camera Travel Close Up Taking Photos

Truth be told I've always struggled with my identity as an image maker. I've never been able to lock down my own style or process (although, that in itself could be my style and process). I admire so many great creatives - many of them I've discovered through EyeEm - and I always see photos and I think 'I want one of those'. John Mayer has said that his music is often a result of hearing a record and thinking the same, it is then in his failure to recreate the piece that he ends up with his own work. This is how I feel about my photography too, my photos are my failures to recreate techniques of others. In the past I used to use Photoshop to edit my images and my workflow was limited to what was in that program. It was a much cleaner way of working, without the distraction of different programs to choose from. Then I started learning Apple Aperture and, when that was discontinued, I started playing with Adobe Lightroom. Then came along plugins, film emulators, mobile apps and filters and this made it much harder to focus on the kind of images I want to create. I'd get lost trying to find ways to produce certain looks or simply wouldn't be able to choose between 10 different edits of the same image. In the past few weeks I've gave a lot of attention to creating images that are visually similar but... It feels like putting myself in a box. I admire the amazing curated collections of images creators share but I haven't figured out how to do that myself yet. So instead of trying to make my feed flow with visually similar images I want to take it back to photography being fun. Playful edits that are a joy instead of an inner debate about which edit is best. want to prevent myself from the distraction of different software, apps and filters and so I've decided to go all in with EyeEm. The @Team have done an amazing job with the app & community and they've created a platform that allows my images to be shared with you all. I've played with a variety of processes and software recently but I'll be doing most (if not all) of my editing on the EyeEm app from now on. The EyeEm app has some wonderful editing options and they are so quick to do. They are also restrictive in some ways (when compared to something like Photoshop) and I've found that this actually makes photography more fun for me. It's less about perfect pixels and more about darkroom style actions like cropping and vignettes. I want to enjoy the act of sharing images and not get caught up with the endless second-guessing of 'am I using the right tool?' I've been pretty caught up in that recently which is why I haven't posted frequently. EyeEm got me back into photography a few years ago and now it acts as a reminder to focus less on perfecting every image and more on having fun creating. Thank you all for following along, sharing your images on here and chatting to me in the comments. That's what it's all about. 👌🏼 (and now I need to hashtag this image 😄) Flamingo Flamingos Exotic Birds Bright Market Bestsellers August 2016 Bestsellers
