Here’s a brief recap from Akbar, who organized the meetup:

The meetup started at 2 p.m. at Taman Fatahillah (or Fatahillah Square), Kota Tua Jakarta. The location itself was chosen for its beautiful old buildings, reminiscent of the vicinity during colonial times in the 16th century. The meetup began with few of the early birds having little chats at the Batavia Cafe terrace while we waited for more people to come.

After a group of 15 people arrived, we started the photowalk at 2:45 p.m. heading off to the west end of the Fatahillah Square, passing by the historical Wayang Museum (Wayang is roughly translated as Javanese puppetry). We were pretty lucky that day not only because the weather was awesome but also of the traditional market along the Square being open for business very early.

There were so many interesting subjects that we were promptly drawn into the markets and became part of the excited crowd.

After spending few minutes in the area, we directed our route to an underground passageway that led to the Kota Busway terminal. This was probably the most interesting place since we spent quite a while there. The lighting was just perfect and many of us took advantage of it, taking loads of low-lit pictures and of the unique architectural design.

After we went up to ground level we headed off to Kota train station and had a brief rest there while having a round of picture-taking of the chaos and frenzy. During this time, the participants had already grown to almost 30 people and as a final stop we went to the heart of the Fatahillah Square to watch few of the attractions that were taking place and, of course, snapped more pictures of the traditional market that had become livelier as the day went on.

By 5 p.m. we were all gathered at the Batavia Cafe and capped off the meetup by having few drinks, chats and, yes, even more picture sessions! I guess that’s what happens when you gather a bunch of mobile photography fanatics in one place : )
