Bideford's medieval arched Long Bridge dates from 1474 & spans the River Torridge near its estuary and connects the East and West of the town - it is believed an original timber bridge was built in 1286 - This stone masonry bridge has 24 arches all of different sizes - the traditional explanation is that each arch was funded by a different local guild whilst another theory is that the piers of the arches were built on naturally existing and therefore randomly situated large stones in the river. - the River Torridge is the setting for the famous and much loved novel 'Tarka The Otter' by Henry Williamson. - In the C16th Bideford was Britain's third largest port and Sir Walter Raleigh landed his first shipment of tobacco here.
