"Expect the Unexpected" A good motto for hiking and camping in the desert, where venemous snakes, scorpions, spiders, biting insects and even the odd venemous lizard (Gila Monster) lurk unseen before lunging at your ankle and delivering a fatal dose of venom. As our beloved (ahem) ex Sectretary of War used to say, "there are known unknowns, and unknown unknowns." Pictured here is one of the unknown unknowns. It is the cone of an Engelmann Spruce which I found lying on the ground in the Mohave Desert of Red Rock Canyon, just west of Las Vegas. That's easy you say, the are very high mountains immediately north. And that is true but there is one problem. Only bristlecone pine and white fir grow there. The closest spruce is about 100 miles to the northeast in a different set of mountains in between which is nothing but desert. The in void explanation would be someone has visited a Great Basin National Patk or one of several Nevada state parks to the north and picked up a vine or two while hiking in the subalpine, then casually tossed it aside in a hike here. Almost 30 feet from the trail. Yes, we can cobble together a series of contingencies that get us from there to here, but in suk they highly unlikely. A mystery! And certainly an instance of an unknown unknown in the Mohave Desert west of Las Vegas.
