Visual Journal January 17, 2017 Western, Nebraska - 15 and 16 January 2017 Ice Storm - Over the course of 15 and 16 January 2017, an upper-level storm system tracked from northwest Mexico into the central Plains. A seasonably moist low-level air mass present ahead of the upper-air disturbance surged north through the Great Plains, atop a sub-freezing, near-surface layer of air. The net result was a widespread ice storm which affected locations from the southern High Plains into the mid Missouri River Valley. This winter storm was unusual from the perspective that the predominant precipitation type was freezing rain with little in the way of observed snowfall. Over eastern Nebraska and southwest Iowa, ice accumulations ranged from 0.50-0.75" across southeast Nebraska to 0.10-0.20" in the Omaha Metro area.
