Havasupai

Again, and again... | While we hung out longer at Havasu Falls, I decided to get close to the falls. Caught the sliver of the light edging the tip of the rocks by the top portion of the falls. I must’ve been too close though. I found myself taking a shot and then wiping off the mist on the lens. Took another, wiped it again. Again, and again... She didn’t hesitate | I asked my friend if she could hop over to the closest rock to Havasu Falls and pose there. She didn’t hesitate. Remember it was late September. The mist swirling in the air was one thing. The constant splashes in the shade was another. The longer she stood there, the colder it got. And I took more than just a few shots. And yet, no complaint whatsoever. She was a real trooper! Forceful nature of this creek water | As hiking back along Havasu Creek, I was often left behind alone due to many stops that I made while taking photos. I didn’t mind at all. One can’t take landscape photos by rushing through an area he/she is in anyway. The canyon got extremely narrow at times and created this dramatic and a bit surreal atmosphere with the sun glowing from behind the canyon walls. Some openings were quite narrow as if the canyon walls were closing in. It was hard to imagine that this canyon had been in fact created by the forceful nature of this creek water many many years ago, and now what was left was a pretty much shallow depth of stream that ran in the canyon floor. Enormity of erosion that this body of water has caused | The Colorado River looked awe inspiring with all the fascinating canyon rock formations. It wasn’t the first time having been to the river, but this was definitely the first time seeing the confluence of the ever blue-green Havasu Creek and the river. Or technically the creek joining the river. Definitely every time when I stood before this almighty river, I was mesmerized by the enormity of the erosion that this body of water has caused to create the Grand Canyon. There was a more than usually visible ‘bathtub ring’ in the canyon wall across the river from me that clearly showed near a historic low level of the river. It was at least 25-50 feet higher than where I was. Considering the fact that the deepest of the river is only about 85 feet deep, I wondered if it was just a matter of time for the river to completely dry up. Would be a sad day. Havasu Falls is located deep in the valley in Grand Canyon area. There is no sunset here. it turns from bright to dark pretty fast. The water is unbelievably blue. Havasu Falls at night. This is one of the most stunning falls in the U.S in my opinion. What makes the scenery more valuable is the fact that we have to hike 10 miles to see it in the desert Sun. A lot of people start the journey from the top of the trail at 4am. On the way back to the trail head, we have to do the same to avoid the mid day Sun. The last two miles of the hike out is pretty challenging, as you are directly exposed to the Sun, and it's a vertical climb. I've done this before, it was hard, but I didn't hesitate one bit to do it again. The second time was as spectacular as the first time, and I got to capture the falls in the night time. Little sanctuary that we found ourselves in | Our slow morning adventure was followed by a short hike to Navajo Falls. Those who hike into Havasupai Campground can’t miss this falls because it is located literally right by the trail. It consists of two separate waterfalls several hundred feet apart - Upper and Lower Navajo Falls. We began our exploration with the Upper first. I was quite amazed by how nicely it was falling, considering how dry the season had been. This was the closest image that I was able to capture without getting myself wet. I liked the canyon top with the cell tower (or maybe radio tower, but, as a matter of fact, we were getting cell signal at the falls when we couldn’t get, understandably, anywhere else) as a backdrop from this angle anyway. It was a little sanctuary that we found ourselves in. We took a quick snack break here. Intimate closeup of this almost sacred Havasu Creek | While the rest of the group continued hiking back to the campground, a friend and I took a longer break here at this small but wonderful waterfalls. Well, a photography break, that was. If Beaver Falls and Mooney Falls were the glamorized representation of Havasupai, which attracts an ample amount of backpackers every year, this little cascades with no name located somewhere between the two was a perfect candidate for such an intimate closeup of this almost sacred Havasu Creek. Havasupai people found their home here in the Grand Canyon over 800 years ago. But the creek had been flowing for thousands years before they got here, if not hundreds of thousands of years. The creek still ran strong, and it had been the source of life here. Definitely not for faint-hearted | Once done with early dinner back at Havasupai Campground, we headed for Havasu Falls. We wanted to spend some time by the large pool at the bottom of the falls. One of the most beautiful waterfalls in America looked quite epic. As was the same at Mooney Falls, the roaring sound of water falling was quite deafening. Not too long ago a bunch of youngsters filmed their crazy jumps from the top of the falls into the pool. This YouTube video went viral, and as dangerous as it is, it glamorized the whole experience of visiting the waterfalls. Mind you, it is about 100 feet high. It is definitely not for the faint-hearted. Because the top of the falls via a dirt path was quite close to the main trail, we saw quite a few people came in and out of sight at the top although no one jumped. Luckily there were some moments where no one was around either at the top or near the bottom of the falls. One of most beautiful waterfalls in America | When one arrives near Havasupai Campground, the first waterfalls that greets him/her are Navajo Falls. Although as beautiful as they are, more popular one here is definitely Havasu Falls. It’s a about 100 feet tall waterfall that plunges directly into a pool. Due to the high concentration of calcium carbonate in the water, the pool and Havasu Creek look vivid blue-green. I was quite excited to be back. I took my time taking photos there while thinking to myself what another great opportunity to photograph one of the most beautiful waterfalls in America was. Stream looked quite enticing for quick dip | While taking our well deserved lunch break by the almighty Colorado River, we enjoyed watching a group of daredevils rafting down the river. Although the sun was still hung high, it was time for us to head back. The days were shorter in September. We took the same Havasu Creek route that we had taken to get to the river back to the campground. The scenery now looked different as we were gaining elevation. Especially as we walked along the creek, the vegetation surrounding the blue-green stream looked quite full of life juxtaposed against the dry canyon walls glowing in orange by the bouncing sunlight. Those high canyon walls mostly spared us from getting overheated in the sun, but at times it was inevitable. Certainly it felt cooler in the shade. What Havasupai people saw in fall night sky | I hiked up to Havasu Falls, where it felt like more stars came out in the sky. Being far enough from the campground and yet still surrounded by the tall canyon walls, let alone being in one of the least polluted parts of the country, really increased the visibility of the stars with my bare eye. Facing northeast, I captured the typical north tip of the Milky Way along with Cassiopeia that rose above Havasu Falls. Because it was late September, I was expected to be able to see the Andromeda galaxy (in fall, and best in November). And there it was - M31, our neighboring galaxy. It is a bit misleading though because the galaxy, 4 billion years younger than our own, is technically 2.537 million light years away. Wondered what the Havasupai people saw in the fall night sky over the span of at least 800 years of their occupancy across the Grand Canyon. Upon setting foot in this Havasupai people’s land | We knew we started our hike early, but it was quite a pleasant surprise when we found no one but ourselves at Beaver Falls. So, we decided to take advantage of it before continuing down the trail to the Colorado River. Also, I loved the early morning vibe that had not been disturbed by the afternoon heat. While the light was hitting the canyon walls, which provided enough fill light for the creek in return, the majority of the waterfalls were still in shade. The vivid blue-green water and the surrounding greenery popped, pleasantly complimented by the brown canyon walls, glowing in bright orange. This is certainly one of the favorite waterfalls by many because its shallow depth of the pools allows them to soak themselves in the water forever. No one would argue that it is truly heaven on earth upon setting foot in this Havasupai people’s land. Stars dancing above magnificent falls | Once night fell, I headed out to Mooney Falls by myself. My original plan had been to climb all the way down to the bottom of the waterfall, but considering how slippery it was while climbing down and up the ladders earlier during day, I figured it could’ve been more dangerous at night. And of course, the story of how James Mooney died came to mind. So, I decided to stay near the cave. From there I was able to see the Andromeda galaxy slowly rising above Mooney Falls. How cool is that! Since I had already captured the northern part of the Milky Way and the Andromeda galaxy over Havasu Falls the night before, I decided to do star trails instead. Countless braids of waterfalls | We moved several hundreds of feet down to Lower Navajo Falls. The sheer size of it topped the upper falls. The countless braids of waterfalls intertwined the moss covered rock formations. The sound of the massive amount of water falling was just purely deafening. And unlike the upper falls, some daredevils jumped off the top into the pool about 50 feet below. Exhilarating. Everybody was cheering at the bottom as soon as someone emerged at the top. Stunning cascading waterfalls | Next day our plan was to hike Havasu Creek all the way down to the Colorado River to see the famous confluence where the beautiful creek and the mighty river meet. Why is it famous? Because while the color of the creek stays vibrant blue-green throughout the year due to large amounts of calcium carbonate in the water, the colors of the river changes to green because of algae or light tan or reddish brown because of silt, depending on the season and/or area. So, it is fun to see the two streams of water merge. Well technically the river is bigger, wider and deeper, so it’s appropriate to say that the creek joins it, but the fascination lies where these distinctive colors merge. On our way down to the river, we made a brief stop at Beaver Falls and enjoyed the stunning cascading waterfalls. Falls was named after James Mooney | Once all of us safely got down to the bottom of Mooney Falls, we took our time to enjoy the view from there. Some of us had been there more than once before. Some of us had never been there before. And it was my second time admiring this iconic waterfall and its vivid blue-green pool. It was rather chilly to jump into the water. As the Havasu Creek water simply drops about 200 feet below, it becomes Mooney Falls. The falls was named after James Mooney, a miner for minerals. He tried to rescue his injured companion by climbing the falls while his companion tied to his back, but unfortunately, he fell to his death. Waited for wind to calm down | After a snack break, a couple of friends and I jumped into the pool. I wanted to get a full frontal shot of Navajo Falls. Considering the fact that you have to carry your camera and a tripod in the almost chest deep water at one point, although it’s mostly waist deep, I didn’t think it would encourage many photographers to do just that. Especially without any help. The water was slightly on the colder side although it was sunny (because it was still morning), especially when we got closer to the falls. The thick mist was swirling in the air and often slapped our faces with big washes of vapor. Finding the spot to frame the entire waterfalls involved a slow and laborious walk across the slimy and sticky bottom of the pool. At one point, this mud quicksand that I stepped in wouldn’t let go of my leg. I almost lost balance trying to pull it out. Thankfully, my friend came to rescue. In the end, the view of the waterfalls from the far ledge of the pool, just inches away from a big drop into another pool below, was just worth every ounce of effort. The force of the water can be easily felt even at the top of the cliff before going down, and the mist permeating in the air is quite exhilarating. Climbing down the cliff wall to the fall though can be challenging for many - it is fine as long as one takes his/her time - and even impossible for some. The middle to bottom section, only possible by holding onto the chains and wooden ladders, although securely bolted to the wall, would either quench one’s thrill-seeking thirst or test one’s fear of heights.
