We are the first generation to be able to end poverty, and the last generation that can take steps to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. Future generation will judge us harshly if we fail to uphold our moral and historical responsibilities. - BAN KI-MOO, SECRETARY-GENERAL, UNITED NATIONS. . . . . THE GREATER ONE-HORN RHINOCEROS @ KAZIRANGA, ASSAM, INDIA - FEB 2017. - - - The Indian rhinoceros also called the greater one-horned rhinoceros, is a rhinoceros native to the Indian sincontinent. It is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, as populations are fragmented and restricted to less than 20,000 km2 (7,700 sq mi). Moreover the extent of quality of the rhino's most important habitat, alluvial grassland and riverine forest, is considered to be in the decline due to human and livestock encroachment. Once found throughout the Indo-Gangetic Plain, excessive hunting & agricultural development reduced their range to only 11 sites in northern India and southern Nepal. In early 1990s between 1870 to 1895 rhinos were estimated to be alive. In 2015, a total of 3556 Indian rhinoceros are estimated to live in the wild.
