"North to Alaska, Go North, the Rush Is On!" A flock of Cabada geese in flight, maintaining their typical invented v formation. I spotted them ALMOST too late to get a picture. I was going about refusing the suntruse from a new spot, Vegas Wash at Vegas Valley road. "Wash" in an Anglo word for the more commonly empliyed Soanish term "arroyo". Not quite a river but neither a pitiablely dry ditch, the Vegas Wash is the product of confluence of hundreds of intermittent creeks and smaller washed combing to form essentially a river that carries storm precipitation and runoff from human economic endeavors. The channel was deepened and improved in the 1990's such that more water was conserved and stream flow regularized, attracting tens of thousands of shore, lake, and wading birds. "Good Morning from the Mojave Desert!" I decided to try a different spot for my sunrise pictures today. Instead of my aerie on the Boukder Station Casino Parking Garage, I made for the intersection of Vegas Valley Road with the Vegas Wash and the Flamingo Nature Trail. At this point, the Vegas Wash is one if the largest Arroyos in the Las Vegas Valley. It us winter now when we receive a substantial portion of our precipitation for the year. Although not readily apparent in this capture, there were great many water foul and wading birds, including herons, egrets, ducks, gulls, and plovers along with grackles, road runners, California quail, pigeons and doves. Coyotes are also frequent, attracted by the promise of high protein meals. Dawn abd dusk are especially good times to observe bird life as they are either just settling down fir the evening roost or just waking up from over night. It may seem odd to find wading abd sea birds in the middle of the desert but Las Vegas' organization final appeal to native Americans and European settlers was it resistive abundance of water ("Vegas" means wet meadows) relative to the surrounding desert. In fact, two miles downstream from this spot, the wash existed greatly abd the water disappears under ground to form an extended an extensive area of "Vegas". These have been purchased by the county government and set aside as the Desert Wetlands Park protecting a diverse array of plant and animal species of the Mojave Desert.
